The Arfak Ant Plant
What Is Myrmecodia arfakensis?
Myrmecodia arfakensis is a rare tropical “ant plant” known for its swollen, spiny caudex that naturally forms chambers for ants in the wild. It belongs to the Myrmecodia genus, a group of unusual plants native to Southeast Asia and parts of Papua.
The name arfakensis refers to the Arfak region, where this species is found growing in warm, humid forests. In nature, ants live inside the hollow caudex and help protect the plant. In cultivation, ants are not required, but the plant still develops its thick, textured base.
It is not an aquatic plant and should never be submerged. Instead, it grows best in airy, well-draining media with bright indirect light and stable humidity.
Bold and sculptural, Myrmecodia arfakensis is ideal for collectors who appreciate rare plants with unique natural adaptations.
How It Grows
This plant grows from a swollen caudex that becomes larger and more textured over time. The surface may develop small spine-like bumps.
Thin green stems emerge from the top of the caudex, producing small leaves.
Growth is slow but steady under stable tropical conditions.
The Leaves
The leaves are simple and neat.
Color: medium to deep green
Surface: smooth
Shape: oval to slightly elongated
The main feature of the plant is the thick, sculptural caudex rather than the foliage.
Light Needs
Prefers bright, indirect light.
Avoid strong direct sunlight
Good light supports healthy stem growth
Low light may slow development.
Water & Growing Conditions
Allow the growing medium to partially dry between watering
Use very well-draining, airy mix (similar to orchid or epiphyte mix)
Prefers moderate to high humidity
Ideal temperature: 22–30°C
Avoid overwatering, especially around the caudex, to prevent rot.
Growing Environment
Best suited for:
Indoor tropical collections
Mounted or exposed caudex displays
Greenhouses or humidity cabinets
Not suitable for aquariums or submerged environments.
Care Level
Medium care.
Better for growers with some experience
Requires excellent drainage
Slow-growing but long-lived
Handling Note
Do not bury the caudex fully in soil. Keep part of it exposed to allow airflow and reduce the risk of rot. With stable warmth and careful watering, Myrmecodia arfakensis will gradually develop a larger and more textured base over time.
