The Holtum’s Ant Fern

What Is Lecanopteris holttumii?

Lecanopteris holttumii is a rare tropical epiphytic fern known for its swollen, hollow rhizome that naturally houses ants in the wild. It belongs to the Lecanopteris genus, a unique group of “ant ferns” native to Southeast Asia.

In its natural forest habitat, ants live inside the rhizome and help protect the plant. In cultivation, ants are not required, but the plant still develops its thick, sculptural base. This unusual structure makes it highly attractive to collectors.

It is not an aquatic plant and should never be submerged. Instead, it thrives when mounted on wood or grown in very airy, well-draining media under warm and humid conditions.

Architectural and uncommon, Lecanopteris holttumii is ideal for plant lovers who appreciate rare and unusual ferns.

How It Grows

This fern grows from a thick, creeping rhizome that becomes swollen and textured over time. The rhizome may naturally form hollow chambers.

Fronds grow upright from the rhizome, forming a neat and structured display.

Growth is slow to moderate in stable tropical environments.

The Leaves (Fronds)

The fronds are narrow and divided.

  • Color: bright to medium green

  • Surface: smooth

  • Shape: segmented and slightly arching

The fresh green fronds contrast beautifully with the rugged rhizome.

Light Needs

Prefers bright, indirect light.

  • Avoid direct sunlight

  • Filtered light supports healthy frond development

Too little light may slow growth.

Water & Growing Conditions

  • Keep the medium lightly moist but never waterlogged

  • Use very well-draining, airy mix or mount on wood

  • Requires moderate to high humidity

  • Ideal temperature: 22–30°C

Good airflow helps prevent rot.

Growing Environment

Best suited for:

  • Mounted displays

  • Orchid-style pots

  • Greenhouses or humidity cabinets

Not suitable for aquariums or submerged setups.

Care Level

Medium care.

  • Better for growers with some experience

  • Sensitive to overwatering

  • Slow-growing but long-lived

Handling Note

Do not bury the rhizome deeply in soil. Keep it exposed or lightly covered to allow airflow. With stable warmth and humidity, Lecanopteris holttumii will gradually develop a larger and more textured rhizome over time.
