The Celebes Ant Fern

What Is Lecanopteris celebica?

Lecanopteris celebica is a rare tropical fern known for its swollen, hollow rhizome that naturally forms chambers for ants. Native to Sulawesi (formerly called Celebes), Indonesia, this species belongs to a unique group of epiphytic “ant ferns.”

In the wild, ants live inside the rhizome and protect the plant. In cultivation, ants are not required, but the plant still develops its distinctive thick base. This unusual structure makes it highly attractive to collectors.

It is not an aquatic plant and should not be submerged. Instead, it grows best mounted on wood or in very well-draining, airy media under warm and humid conditions.

Uncommon and architectural, Lecanopteris celebica is perfect for plant lovers who enjoy rare ferns with natural character.

How It Grows

This fern grows from a swollen rhizome that creeps and expands over time. The rhizome becomes textured and hollow, giving it a rugged, sculptural look.

Fronds grow upright from the rhizome, forming a compact but structured display.

Growth is slow to moderate in stable tropical conditions.

The Leaves (Fronds)

The fronds are firm and divided.

  • Color: bright to medium green

  • Surface: smooth

  • Shape: narrow and segmented, typical of tropical ferns

The clean green fronds contrast beautifully with the thick rhizome.

Light Needs

Prefers bright, indirect light.

  • Avoid direct sunlight

  • Filtered light supports healthy frond growth

Too little light may slow development.

Water & Growing Conditions

  • Keep medium lightly moist but not soggy

  • Use very well-draining, airy mix or mount on wood

  • Requires moderate to high humidity

  • Ideal temperature: 22–30°C

Good airflow helps prevent rot.

Growing Environment

Best suited for:

  • Mounted displays

  • Orchid-style pots

  • Greenhouses or humidity cabinets

Not suitable for aquariums or submerged environments.

Care Level

Medium care.

  • Suitable for growers with some experience

  • Sensitive to overwatering

  • Slow-growing but long-lived

Handling Note

Do not bury the rhizome deeply in soil. Keep it exposed or lightly covered to allow airflow. With stable warmth and humidity, Lecanopteris celebica will slowly develop a larger and more textured base over time.
