The Armored Ant Fern

What Is Lecanopteris balgooyi?

Lecanopteris balgooyi is a rare tropical fern known for its thick, swollen rhizome that forms natural chambers for ants. It belongs to the Lecanopteris genus, a group of epiphytic “ant ferns” native to Southeast Asia.

In the wild, ants live inside the hollow rhizomes, helping protect the plant. In cultivation, ants are not necessary, but the plant still develops its unique, sculptural base.

Unlike common ferns, this species grows attached to trees in humid forests. It is not an aquatic plant and should not be submerged. It prefers airy mounting or very well-draining media.

Strange and architectural, Lecanopteris balgooyi is ideal for collectors who enjoy unusual ferns with natural character.

How It Grows

This fern grows from a thick, swollen rhizome that creeps and expands over time. The rhizome develops textured, hollow sections that give it a rugged appearance.

Fronds grow upward from the rhizome, creating a balanced and structured look.

Growth is slow to moderate under stable tropical conditions.

The Leaves (Fronds)

The fronds are firm and neatly divided.

  • Color: bright to medium green

  • Surface: smooth

  • Shape: narrow and segmented, typical of ferns

The foliage contrasts beautifully with the rough, swollen rhizome.

Light Needs

Prefers bright, indirect light.

  • Avoid direct sunlight

  • Soft filtered light supports healthy frond growth

Low light may slow development.

Water & Growing Conditions

  • Keep the growing medium lightly moist but never soggy

  • Use very well-draining, airy substrate or mount on wood

  • Requires moderate to high humidity

  • Ideal temperature: 22–30°C

Good airflow is important to prevent rot.

Growing Environment

Best suited for:

  • Mounted displays

  • Orchid-style pots with airy media

  • Greenhouses or humidity cabinets

Not suitable for aquariums or submerged environments.

Care Level

Medium care.

  • Better for growers with some experience

  • Sensitive to overwatering

  • Slow-growing but long-lasting

Handling Note

Do not bury the rhizome deeply in soil. Keep it exposed or lightly covered to allow airflow. With stable warmth and humidity, Lecanopteris balgooyi will slowly develop a larger, more textured rhizome over time.
