The Mystery Ant Plant

What Is Hydnophytum sp.?

Hydnophytum sp. refers to an unidentified species within the Hydnophytum genus, a group of tropical “ant plants” known for their swollen caudex and natural partnership with ants in the wild.

The term “sp.” means the exact species has not been formally identified. However, like other Hydnophytum, it develops a thick, bulb-like base with internal chambers that house ants in nature. In cultivation, ants are not required, but the plant keeps its unique shape.

Native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia and nearby areas, Hydnophytum grows in warm, humid forests, often attached to trees. It is not an aquatic plant and should never be submerged.

Unusual and sculptural, Hydnophytum sp. is valued for its swollen base and natural, wild appearance.

How It Grows

This plant grows from a swollen caudex that becomes larger and more textured as it matures.

Stems grow upward from the top of the caudex, producing small green leaves. Growth is generally slow but steady under stable conditions.

The Leaves

The leaves are simple and clean in appearance.

  • Color: light to medium green

  • Surface: smooth

  • Shape: oval to slightly elongated

The main attraction is the thick caudex rather than the foliage.

Light Needs

Prefers bright, indirect light.

  • Avoid strong direct sunlight

  • Good light supports healthy stem growth

Too little light may slow development.

Water & Growing Conditions

  • Allow the growing medium to partially dry between watering

  • Use very well-draining, airy mix (similar to orchid or epiphyte mix)

  • Prefers moderate to high humidity

  • Ideal temperature: 22–30°C

Avoid overwatering, especially around the caudex.

Growing Environment

Best suited for:

  • Indoor tropical collections

  • Mounted or exposed caudex displays

  • Greenhouse setups

Not suitable for aquariums or submerged environments.

Care Level

Medium care.

  • Suitable for growers with some experience

  • Requires excellent drainage

  • Slow-growing but long-lived

Handling Note

Do not fully bury the caudex. Keep part of it exposed to prevent rot and allow airflow. With stable warmth and careful watering, Hydnophytum sp. will slowly develop a larger, more textured base over time.
