The Living Ant Chamber

What Is Hydnophytum caminiferum?

Hydnophytum caminiferum is a unique tropical plant known as an “ant plant” because of its natural partnership with ants in the wild. It belongs to the Rubiaceae family and grows naturally in Southeast Asia and nearby tropical regions.

This plant develops a swollen base called a caudex, which contains natural hollow chambers. In nature, ants live inside these chambers and protect the plant. In cultivation, ants are not required, but the plant keeps its unusual swollen shape.

Hydnophytum caminiferum is not an aquatic plant and should not be submerged. It grows best in airy, well-draining media with warm temperatures and good humidity.

Strange and fascinating, this plant is perfect for collectors who enjoy rare species with unusual forms.

How It Grows

This plant grows from a swollen caudex (bulb-like base). Over time, the caudex becomes larger and more textured.

From the top of the caudex, stems grow upward with small green leaves. Growth is slow to moderate under stable conditions.

The Leaves

The leaves are small and simple.

  • Color: bright to medium green

  • Surface: smooth

  • Shape: oval to slightly elongated

The main visual focus of the plant is the thick caudex rather than the leaves.

Light Needs

Prefers bright, indirect light.

  • Avoid strong direct sunlight

  • Good light supports healthy stem growth

Too little light may slow development.

Water & Growing Conditions

  • Allow the growing medium to partially dry between watering

  • Use very well-draining, airy mix (similar to orchid mix)

  • Prefers moderate to high humidity

  • Ideal temperature: 22–30°C

Avoid overwatering, especially around the caudex.

Growing Environment

Best suited for:

  • Indoor tropical collections

  • Mounted displays

  • Pots with airy substrate

  • Greenhouse environments

Not suitable for aquariums or submerged setups.

Care Level

Medium care.

  • Better for growers with some experience

  • Requires good drainage

  • Slow-growing but long-lived

Handling Note

Do not bury the caudex fully in soil; keep part of it exposed to prevent rot. With proper drainage and stable warmth, Hydnophytum caminiferum will slowly develop a larger, more textured base over time.
