The Soft Shield Rabbit’s Foot

What Is Davallia solida (often traded as “Davallia sensifolia”)?

Davallia sensifolia (commonly linked to Davallia solida forms in trade) is a tropical fern known for its creeping, fuzzy rhizomes and broader, slightly firmer fronds compared to finer Davallia types.

Like other rabbit’s foot ferns, it grows naturally in warm, humid forests, often attached to trees or rocks. It is not an aquatic plant and should never be submerged. Instead, it prefers airy media and steady humidity.

Its visible, hairy rhizomes spread over the surface, while the fronds rise upright with a soft but structured appearance.

Natural and textured, this fern is ideal for collectors who enjoy classic rabbit’s foot forms with slightly bolder foliage.

How It Grows

This fern grows from creeping, fuzzy rhizomes that spread across the surface of the pot or mount. The rhizomes should remain exposed and not buried.

Growth is moderate in warm, humid conditions.

The Leaves (Fronds)

The fronds are divided but slightly broader than delicate species.

  • Color: medium to deep green

  • Surface: soft with natural matte finish

  • Shape: divided, slightly firm fern fronds

The exposed rhizomes are one of its most attractive features.

Light Needs

Prefers bright, indirect light.

  • Avoid direct sunlight

  • Soft light keeps fronds healthy

Too much sun may scorch the leaves.

Water & Growing Conditions

  • Keep the growing medium lightly moist

  • Use airy, well-draining mix (moss, bark, or fern mix)

  • Prefers moderate to high humidity

  • Ideal temperature: 20–28°C

Avoid waterlogging and never bury the rhizomes.

Growing Environment

Best suited for:

  • Terrariums

  • Mounted displays

  • Indoor tropical collections

  • Humid greenhouse setups

Not suitable for aquariums or submerged environments.

Care Level

Medium care.

  • Suitable for growers with basic fern experience

  • Sensitive to very dry air

  • Moderate growth rate

Handling Note

Allow the fuzzy rhizomes to stay visible and spread naturally. With stable humidity and consistent moisture, Davallia sensifolia will maintain its creeping form and structured green fronds.
