The Obsidian River Shadow

What Is Bucephalandra sp. ‘Obsidian’?

Bucephalandra sp. ‘Obsidian’ is a dark-toned Bucephalandra known for its deep, almost black foliage. The term “sp.” means the exact species has not been formally identified, while “Obsidian” refers to its intense, stone-like dark color.

Like all Bucephalandra, it originates from Borneo and naturally grows attached to rocks and driftwood in fast-flowing jungle streams. It is a true aquatic plant that can grow fully submerged in aquariums or emersed in humid environments.

This variety is prized for its dramatic contrast and strong visual impact, especially in nature-style aquascapes.

How It Grows

This plant grows from a creeping rhizome that attaches securely to rocks or driftwood. It spreads slowly and forms compact clusters over time.

Growth is slow under stable aquarium conditions.

The Leaves

The leaves are thick and firm.

  • Color: very dark green to nearly black

  • Surface: smooth with subtle sheen

  • Shape: oval to slightly elongated

The deep coloration is its most distinctive feature.

Light Needs

Prefers low to medium light.

  • Moderate light enhances leaf depth

  • Avoid very strong lighting to reduce algae growth

Stable lighting supports consistent color.

Water & Aquarium Conditions

  • Attach to rock or driftwood

  • Do not bury the rhizome

  • Thrives in clean, well-circulated water

  • CO₂ is optional but improves growth

  • Ideal temperature: 22–28°C

Stable water parameters are important.

Growing Environment

Best suited for:

  • Freshwater aquariums

  • Nano tanks

  • Contrast-focused aquascapes

  • Paludariums (emersed form)

Care Level

Low to medium care.

  • Suitable for beginners

  • Slow-growing and easy to manage

  • Minimal trimming required

Handling Note

Always keep the rhizome above the substrate to prevent rot. Once attached and stable, Bucephalandra sp. ‘Obsidian’ will grow steadily and maintain its rich, dark foliage.
