The Bengkayang River Native

What Is Bucephalandra sp. ‘Bengkayang’?

Bucephalandra sp. ‘Bengkayang’ is a locality-based Bucephalandra collected from the Bengkayang region in West Kalimantan, Borneo. The term “sp.” means the exact species has not been formally identified, so it is known by its collection location.

Like all Bucephalandra, it naturally grows attached to rocks and driftwood along fast-flowing jungle streams. It is a true aquatic plant that can grow fully submerged in aquariums or emersed in high-humidity environments.

Depending on the form, this variety may show green to darker tones, sometimes with subtle metallic sheen. Its natural origin makes it especially appealing to collectors who value wild-type plants.

Authentic and regionally unique, Bucephalandra sp. ‘Bengkayang’ brings a true Borneo river character into aquascapes.

How It Grows

This plant grows from a creeping rhizome that attaches firmly to rocks or driftwood. It spreads slowly and forms compact clusters over time.

Growth is slow under stable aquarium conditions.

The Leaves

The leaves are firm and slightly structured.

  • Color: medium to deep green, sometimes darker depending on light

  • Surface: smooth with light natural sheen

  • Shape: oval to slightly elongated

Leaf size and tone may vary depending on the specific collection form.

Light Needs

Prefers low to medium light.

  • Moderate light supports healthy growth

  • Avoid excessive lighting to reduce algae risk

Stable lighting helps maintain consistent coloration.

Water & Aquarium Conditions

  • Attach to rock or driftwood

  • Do not bury the rhizome

  • Thrives in clean, well-circulated water

  • CO₂ is optional but can improve growth

  • Ideal temperature: 22–28°C

Stable water parameters are important.

Growing Environment

Best suited for:

  • Freshwater aquariums

  • Nano tanks

  • Nature-style aquascapes

  • Paludariums (emersed form)

Care Level

Low care.

  • Suitable for beginners

  • Slow-growing and easy to maintain

  • Minimal trimming required

Handling Note

Always keep the rhizome above the substrate to prevent rot. Once attached and stable, Bucephalandra sp. ‘Bengkayang’ will grow steadily and maintain its natural river form.
