The Tiny River Coin

What Is Bucephalandra ‘Mini Coin’?

Bucephalandra ‘Mini Coin’ is a compact Bucephalandra variety known for its small, round leaves that resemble tiny coins. Its neat shape and low growth make it very popular for nano aquariums and detailed aquascapes.

Like all Bucephalandra, it comes from Borneo, where the plants grow attached to rocks along fast-flowing jungle streams. It is a true aquatic plant that can grow fully submerged or emersed in high-humidity setups.

Because of its miniature size and clean leaf form, Bucephalandra ‘Mini Coin’ adds subtle detail and texture without overwhelming a layout.

How It Grows

This plant grows from a short creeping rhizome and forms tight, compact clusters. It spreads slowly and stays low.

Growth is slow under stable aquarium conditions.

The Leaves

The leaves are small and rounded.

  • Color: medium to deep green

  • Surface: smooth with slight natural sheen

  • Shape: small and circular, coin-like

The round leaf shape is its most distinctive feature.

Light Needs

Prefers low to medium light.

  • Moderate light supports healthy growth

  • Avoid strong lighting to reduce algae risk

Stable lighting keeps the plant compact.

Water & Aquarium Conditions

  • Attach to rock or driftwood

  • Do not bury the rhizome

  • Thrives in clean, well-circulated water

  • CO₂ is optional but can improve growth

  • Ideal temperature: 22–28°C

Stable parameters are important for healthy development.

Growing Environment

Best suited for:

  • Freshwater aquariums

  • Nano tanks

  • Foreground placement

  • Paludariums (emersed form)

Care Level

Low care.

  • Suitable for beginners

  • Very slow-growing and easy to manage

  • Minimal trimming required

Handling Note

Keep the rhizome above the substrate to prevent rot. Once attached and stable, Bucephalandra ‘Mini Coin’ will slowly form neat clusters of tiny round leaves.
