The Shadowed River Jewel

Bucephalandra ‘Brownie Phantom’ is a rare aquatic aroid from the riverbanks of Borneo, admired for its dark, mysterious foliage with subtle metallic undertones. Compared to brighter Bucephalandra types, this variety has a deeper, moodier appearance, making it a favorite among aquascapers who prefer an elegant and natural look.

How It Grows

This plant grows slowly and compactly, forming a low clump that spreads horizontally over time. It attaches naturally to rocks or driftwood, making it perfect for aquariums, paludariums, and nano tanks.

The Leaves

The leaves are thick, firm, and slightly wavy.

  • Base color: dark brown to deep green

  • Finish: subtle metallic or matte sheen

  • Shape: elongated to oval

  • Texture: leathery and sturdy

Under good lighting, the leaves may show a phantom-like shimmer, giving the plant its name.

Light Needs

It prefers low to medium light.

  • Moderate light enhances leaf color and texture

  • Too much light can encourage algae growth

  • Low light keeps the plant stable and healthy

Water & Humidity

As a true aquatic plant, it grows submerged or semi-submerged.

  • Rhizome must stay above substrate

  • Clean, well-oxygenated water is essential

  • Stable water parameters support slow, healthy growth

Growing Environment

Best grown attached to hardscape in aquariums.

  • Suitable for low-tech and high-tech tanks

  • Appreciates gentle water flow

  • CO₂ is optional, not required

Care Level

This is a low to medium-care aquatic plant.

  • Very hardy once established

  • Ideal for both beginners and experienced aquascapers

Handling Note

Do not bury the rhizome in substrate. Attach gently to rock or wood and allow it to root naturally. Growth is slow, but the plant remains long-lasting and visually striking.
