The Spotted Forest Umbrella

What Is Amorphophallus lacourii?

Amorphophallus lacourii is a tropical tuber plant known for its tall, patterned stem and umbrella-like leaf. It belongs to the Amorphophallus genus, a group of unusual plants native to Southeast Asia that grow from underground tubers.

This plant produces a single large leaf during its growing season, rising from a thick tuber below the soil. It is not an aquatic plant and should not be submerged. It grows best in warm, humid conditions with loose, well-draining soil.

The stem often shows decorative mottled or spotted patterns, while the leaf spreads outward like a small tree canopy. Like other Amorphophallus species, it can also produce a unique flowering structure before or between leaf cycles.

Architectural and exotic, Amorphophallus lacourii is ideal for collectors who enjoy bold tropical plants with unusual growth habits.

How It Grows

This plant grows from a round underground tuber. During the active season, one tall stem emerges, topped with a wide, divided leaf.

After its growth period, the plant may enter dormancy. The leaf will die back, and the tuber will rest before the next season.

The Leaves

The leaf is large and finely divided into many smaller leaflets.

  • Color: medium to deep green

  • Surface: smooth with natural matte finish

  • Shape: umbrella-like, spreading outward in layers

The tall stem often has mottled or spotted markings, adding decorative appeal.

Light Needs

Prefers bright, indirect light.

  • Avoid harsh direct sunlight

  • Good light supports strong leaf growth

Low light may lead to weaker stems.

Water & Growing Conditions

  • Keep soil moist during active growth

  • Reduce watering during dormancy

  • Use loose, well-draining soil

  • Prefers moderate to high humidity

  • Ideal temperature: 22–30°C

Never allow the tuber to sit in soggy soil.

Growing Environment

Best suited for:

  • Indoor tropical plant collections

  • Warm outdoor tropical gardens

  • Greenhouses

Not suitable for aquariums or submerged environments.

Care Level

Medium care.

  • Requires understanding of seasonal dormancy

  • Sensitive to overwatering

  • Moderate growth speed during active season

Handling Note

When the leaf naturally dies back, reduce watering and allow the tuber to rest. Do not discard the tuber during dormancy. With proper seasonal care, Amorphophallus lacourii will regrow with strong and impressive foliage.
